Summer Reading

Summer Parent Reading Letter

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Summer reading is important.  When school is dismissed each year, students prepare for a summer

of baseball, swimming, and other activities.  Many students also include reading as an important and

pleasant summer activity.  Reading is a skill, just like swinging a baseball bat or doing the backstroke,

and it requires practice.  Summer reading helps to minimize the loss in reading skills that research

shows may take place during the summer months.  Hamblen County Schools encourages your

student to actively read this summer and become a Summer Reading Achiever. By participating in

this program, students will come back to school prepared to learn and excel.

How does the Summer Reading Achievers Program work?  It’s simple.  During the summer months,

students need to do two things—(1) meet reading goals by reading and/or being read to

(2) maintain a reading log.

READING GOALS:  grades K—3 should read AT LEAST 5 books; grades 4-6 should read AT

LEAST 3 books; and grades 7-8 should read at least 2 books.  I encourage students to read more

than the number of books suggested.

Reading logs should be given to the new teacher when school begins in August. Students who

meet reading goals will be honored during a PTO meeting at their school.

I encourage all parents to promote reading for pleasure over the summer and to take an active

interest in the selection of books.  Encourage the selection of a variety of books.  Being involved in

the book selection offers you an opportunity to assist your student in making appropriate selections

and to share reading accomplishments.

We hope you and your family have a wonderful, safe summer holiday and enjoy many good books

together.

Sincerely,

Dale P. Lynch, Ed. D.

Director of Schools
